Why PNG for 3D Text?
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is the ideal format for 3D text exports because it supports lossless compression and — crucially — transparency through an alpha channel. This combination means you can export a crisp, sharp 3D text render with a transparent background, allowing you to place it over any background in any design tool without any white box or artifacts.
JPEG, by comparison, doesn't support transparency and uses lossy compression that creates visible artifacts around high-contrast edges — exactly the kind of edges that sharp 3D rendered text has. Always use PNG for 3D text exports.
Step 1: Create Your 3D Text in 3dword
Navigate to 3dword.com and open the editor. You don't need to create an account — the entire creation and free export process works without signing up. Choose a template from the gallery, or start fresh with the text editor. Type your desired text and customize the style using the control panels.
Step 2: Optimize for Your Intended Use
Before downloading, think about how you'll use the image. For social media thumbnails and web graphics, 1080p (1920x1080) is the standard and is available free. For print materials (business cards, posters, merchandise), you'll want 4K (3840x2160) or higher, which requires a Premium subscription.
Consider whether you need a transparent or opaque background. If you're placing the 3D text over a specific photo or colored background in another tool, export with transparency. If the current background in the 3dword editor is your final background, export with it included — this preserves any background effects like gradients, grids, or textures that are part of the design.
Step 3: Configure Export Settings
Click the Download button in the 3dword editor toolbar. The export dialog gives you options for resolution and background. Select "PNG" format (the default), choose your resolution, and specify whether to include the background or export with alpha transparency.
The "Transparent Background" option removes the background completely, giving you a floating 3D text render. The "Include Background" option flattens the complete image including whatever background you've configured in the editor.
Step 4: Download and Verify
Click Download. The file generates on the server and downloads immediately to your default downloads folder. Open the file to verify: the transparent areas should show a checkerboard pattern in any image viewer that supports transparency (Preview on Mac, IrfanView on Windows, or directly in Photoshop/Figma).
Verify the actual pixel dimensions match your selection. Right-click the file and view properties (Windows) or Get Info (Mac) to confirm the file resolution.
Free vs Premium: Exact Differences
Free downloads from 3dword: 1080p maximum, PNG format, transparent background support, no watermark, no account required, unlimited downloads. Premium downloads ($6.99/month): up to 4K resolution, plus 8K for advanced plan, plus GIF/MP4 animation export, plus GLB 3D model export for use in Blender or other 3D applications.
The 1080p free export is genuinely high quality. For 95% of digital use cases, 1080p is the correct resolution and the free tier is all you need. Only upgrade if you have specific high-resolution print requirements or need animation formats.
Using Your PNG in Common Tools
In Canva: click "Uploads," upload your PNG, and drag it onto your canvas. The transparency is automatically preserved. In Adobe Premiere Pro: import as a still image and it will composite over your video background automatically. In PowerPoint: Insert > Pictures > select your PNG. The transparent background allows it to float over your slide content. In Figma: drag and drop directly onto the canvas — transparency is preserved.
